Songwriting Split Sheet Template for Co-Writers

Use a songwriting split sheet to capture proposed shares, confirm which draft the writers agreed on, and prepare a clean registration handoff.

The short answer

A songwriting split sheet records who wrote a composition, the shares the writers agree to, and the information needed for the registration handoff. Start the sheet during the session, mark proposed shares clearly, and ask each writer to confirm the same dated revision. Keep recording credits and master arrangements in separate records.

Keep these in mind

  • Identify the composition before discussing shares.
  • Keep proposed and confirmed shares visibly separate.
  • Send the same confirmed revision to the person handling registration.

Which song should the sheet identify?

Write the working title, session date and the names the writers used in the room. Add an identifying draft reference, such as “Window Seat, chorus rewrite from Tuesday,” so a title change does not make the record impossible to match. If the same session yielded two songs from one idea, give each its own record and identify which draft goes with which.

Collect the writer names and registration details privately. A shared lyric or demo can orient the writers without putting their contact details or identifiers into a listening link. Keep one designated keeper of the sheet and tell everyone where to send a correction. Use the listening thread to discuss the song itself.

How do you keep proposed shares from looking final?

Use separate states for collecting details, proposed shares and confirmed shares. Leave a disputed row open and identify the question in plain language. For example, “Confirm whether the bridge melody will remain in the delivered composition” gives the writers something specific to resolve. An empty cell and a zero are different instructions, so write “open” for an undecided share.

Songtrust asks for every co-writer and says agreed shares should add up to 100 percent. Reconcile that total once the group agrees and check the receiving registration service’s own entry conventions. Record production work, performance credits and arrangements about the recording separately so nobody mistakes a composition percentage for an answer to those questions.

What should you put in a songwriting split sheet?

Constructed example: three fictional writers finish Window Seat. Mina brings a verse, Jules reshapes the chorus melody and Tess contributes the bridge. They agree to 40, 35 and 25 percent in this example. Those numbers illustrate a completed record. The notes about the session help the group identify the work and do not determine a formula for shares.

Mina initially circulates revision 01 before Tess confirms the bridge. Once everyone agrees, she sends revision 02 with a clear request to confirm the specific shares shown. The registration handoff points to revision 02 and lists revision 01 as superseded. Replace the fictional entries below with your own, and store personal registration details in the agreed private record.

Make it your own
WORKING TITLE: Window Seat
COMPOSITION REFERENCE: Tuesday chorus rewrite
REVISION: 02
STATUS: Confirmed example
WRITER / COMPOSITION SHARE: Mina 40%; Jules 35%; Tess 25%
TOTAL: 100%
REGISTRATION DETAILS: Collect privately from each writer
CONFIRMATION RECORD: Writer name, revision confirmed, date
HANDOFF OWNER: Mina
PREVIOUS REVISION: 01 superseded

Copy or download, then fill in the details for your song.

What do you check before handing off the confirmed sheet?

Read the title, names and total back against the confirmed revision before anyone starts registration. Ask each writer to check the spelling and identifiers they supplied. If a later rewrite reopens the discussion, circulate a new dated revision and make clear which decisions are open. If someone already submitted the earlier record, flag that to the person handling registration.

Keep the draft audio reference stable across the handoff. In MixPass, a named audio pass can orient the team while they are listening. Keep the actual agreement and any signatures in the separate record your team uses for that purpose.
